Start with a conversation
Before a family road trip, leave time to address changes you have noticed in your vehicle. A hesitation when selecting a gear, a new noise or a fluid leak is easier to discuss before you are far from home. Tell the shop when the symptom occurs and whether towing or a heavy load changes it.
Check the basics before you go
Follow the inspection and maintenance schedule in your vehicle’s owner’s manual. Pay attention to tires, warning lights, fluid service requirements and the condition of any towing equipment. Transmission fluid types and checking procedures vary; some vehicles require a workshop procedure instead of a dipstick check.
Plan for the vehicle you are driving
Know the vehicle’s towing and payload ratings, including passengers and luggage. If you are taking an RV or towing a trailer, call ahead with the vehicle and transmission details so the shop can discuss suitable service.
